Bucket List Travel #winterlust #ExploreAlberta

When Nerdguy and I were graduating from school he had job opportunities in Calgary and Ottawa.  We decided on Ottawa because it was so much closer to home and more practical for staying close with our families.  But man sometimes I wish I hadn’t been afraid to do the impractical.  It looks so beautiful there.  Don’t worry about smacking me…I’ll just go ahead and kick myself.  Hard.  A visit to Alberta is definitely on our bucket list.  Actually two visits – one in the summer for the infamous Calgary Stampede, and one in the winter to take advantage of the incredible mountain views and winter sports.

I could have lived there, and I am sure I would be able to ski and snowboard like this:

I loved to ski when I was a teenager…once I got the knack of going down the mountain without crashing into fences that is.  And I didn’t just love it because my friend and I fell a lot and often needed to be rescued by the hot ski patrol dudes either.  Well that wasn’t the whole reason.  I haven’t skied in years and another friend is trying to convince me to take lessons with her next year.  Protests that I am old and fragile aren’t fending her off, and frankly after watching this video I think I will be the first in line at the bunny hill for lessons – exercising with views like that is so much better than running on a treadmill!  Not that I do that either.

This weekend Grace is going to a tubing birthday party for her best friend.  By no coincidence it is the same family that is trying to convince me to take up skiing – it may be a trap.  Neither Grace nor I have been tubing before so we watched this video to see what it’s like:

What have I done?  There’s no way she’s going to want to go after seeing how fast and terrifying it is, and now she’s going to miss her best friend’s party…or exactly the opposite…my daredevil Grace was lit up like she was going to head for the tubing hill tonight.  I think Alberta just got added to someone else’s bucket list.

I went snowshoeing for the first time two years ago and was amazed at how much I loved it!  How incredible to do it like this:

Have you been to Alberta?  What are your favourite things to do there?
