I thought maybe it’s time that we got to know each other better. Also I love lists. Here are 40 things about me before I turn (gulp) 40 this year:
- The smell of butterscotch makes me feel sick, because butterscotch candies = car sickness from when I was a kid.
- I can wiggle my ears.
- And my nose.
- I can raise one eyebrow, like a good auditor or mother should be able to do.
- I’m horribly allergic to rabbits.
- When I was a kid I fainted or near-fainted every morning.
- I was in a marching band in the colour guard section and then trombone. I was awesome at spinning a flag, and the worst at playing trombone. A tone-deaf asthmatic with small lips has absolutely no business playing a trombone. Nerdguy also played trombone badly, and it is completely unrelated to how we met.
- I’m an only child, who grew up on the same court as my cousin, who was also an only child.
- I once heard pickles described as cucumbers soaked in evil, and I couldn’t agree more.
- I went to Catholic elementary school and public high school because my parents made some kind of compromise.
- I got really good marks in math all through school, but could never do math in my head. Now I can’t count my children without using my fingers.
- Making phone calls is scary for me.
- Pumpkin guts make me itchy.
- Growing up we had a brown poodle named Hershey, who was allergic to himself. Let that sink in for a minute. A hypoallergenic dog who was allergic to himself.
- My favourite Sesame Street characters are Bert & Ernie, and I was more excited to meet them at Sesame Place than the kids were.
- I had a lot of very bad perms as a child.
- I also started going grey in grade 12.
- I passed my driver’s test on the first try, but never did figure out how to parallel park.
- I was kicked off my grade 7 volleyball team – they cut half the team at the end of a tournament. At Catholic school.
- I had the same best friend from grade 1 to grade 9, at which point she and another group of girls bullied me for 3 years.
- In grade 10 I became friends with 2 girls who stuck with me and are still two of my best friends today.
- I used to cross-stitch all the time, but haven’t done it in years because it is so time-consuming. But I kind of miss it.
- I wore glasses in grade 1. When my parents went in for the parent-teacher interview half-way through the year and asked if I had been wearing my glasses, the teacher said “Tara wears glasses?” because I hadn’t worn them once. My eyes corrected themselves after, until about grade 13.
- We had grade 13 when I went to school. It was called OAC.
- My glasses were autographed by Dorothy Hamill.
- I was a Crew Trainer at McDonald’s in high school.
- Indigo is my favourite store.
- I love Italian food, and think garlic bread should be served with every meal.
- Nerdguy laughs at me because I think potatoes should have their own delicious food group.
- I think chocolate gives me migraines, but I refuse to do anything about it.
- I knew we would have a child with autism, and was relieved when our kids were girls. Haha Universe – good one.
- I may be the only person alive who had surgery for a deviated septum and ended up looking exactly the same.
- I have never broken any bones. I am reluctant to say that after my brag-fest about how none of us had broken anything and Grace broke her arm THAT WEEK.
- I have always wanted to see the Nutcracker at Christmas, but I have never been.
- I took the online MENSA test before I had kids, and passed. Now I can barely spell MENTOS.
- I could sleep anywhere anytime. It alarms my friends on the occasions on which I demonstrate this talent. I once fell asleep with my second can of jolt in my hand.
- When I was a kid I carried a stuffed Smurf everywhere. Don’t do the math to see how old of a kid I was.
- I was the only kid on my floor to have a coffee maker in their dorm room.
- Feet are gross and I never want to see pictures of them.
- I’m turning 40 in May, and I’m starting to freak out.
I hope you enjoyed getting to know me better! Are there any of them that we have in common? If you make your own “Things about me” list, leave a comment below so we can all swing by and get to know you better. Just no feet pictures. Deal?

We’ll have to meet up at the salon in May to celebrate our bdays and we can raise our eyebrows at the stylist – you’ll have to call and book the appointments though!! lol

I too have a fear of making phone calls… even easy calls to order a pizza or make an appointment!!!
I too had the deviated septum surgery, looked like Shrek for a while and now look and sound just as I did before that hellish experience.
Seriously, loved this post and getting to know you even better. “Let that sink in…” is awesome!
Tara (Nerdgirlmom) says
THanks Jody!! So glad to know that I’m not the only one to have the surgery and not actually get a nose job – I thought I had been scammed. Didn’t help that his name was Dr. Love 😉 And making appointments is the worst – I get all worked up about what time slot will work and I end up booked something absurd or hanging up!

# 35 made me snort.
# 20 just sucks.
#24 me too.
#38 makes me like you even more.
Tara (Nerdgirlmom) says
Thanks Katja!! It’s important to have coffee on-hand at all times!

40 is awesome. I’m so glad you’ll be joining me this year (it will be my 4th year in). Maybe we’ll share Mike this year?! 😉
And YESSSSS! to 4, 12 & 16. But mostly 12!
Tara (Nerdgirlmom) says
Well you look way younger, so there’s that. Glad to hear that 40 is awesome. We’ll have to text Mike though since neither of us will phone him!! lol
